1st Round of Ljubljana Festival International Competition: Brass Quintets and Quartets (day 3)

The 8^th Winter Festival will this year be accompanied by the Ljubljana Festival International Competition, open to young musicians and ensembles from all over the world. Following last year’s extremely successful piano competition, it is now the turn of brass quartets and quintets. The latter of these ensembles, consisting of two trumpets, French horn, trombone or euphonium and tuba, has been known since the nineteenth century but definitively established itself in the post-war period thanks to a number of celebrated American ensembles, in particular the New York Brass Quintet. The brass quartet, on the other hand, is not a fixed ensemble and can consist of various combinations of instruments. The ensembles invited to the competition thus include quartets of four trombones, four horns, four tubas and two tubas/two euphoniums. The focus of the repertoire to be performed at the competition is on modernist, postmodernist and contemporary works. To this end, the Ljubljana Festival has commissioned a new work from Nina Šenk, one of the most prominent young Slovene composers. She will also form part of the judging panel, which will be chaired by Branimir Slokar, the competition’s artistic director. The international panel will also include trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich, tuba player Andreas Martin Hofmeir (both from Germany) and the Croatian hornist Radovan Vlatković.
