More information

The Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo is renowned as one of the few orchestras capable of moving easily between the rich history of classical music and contemporary, forward-looking musical trends. It is particularly praised for its interpretations of works of musical impressionism, above all those of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy, in which it skilfully brings to the surface the unexpected “dramatic operatic dimensions” of these masterful examples of the art of weaving an aural tapestry. To ensure the perfect experience of this fin-de-siècle French music, the orchestra will be conducted by Charles Dutoit, a regular visitor to Ljubljana. Amid his numerous achievements, it is easy to forget that Dutoit established himself as one of the greatest conductors of our time as a specialist at conjuring the rich palette of orchestral colours that characterise impressionism.
The eminent orchestra and conductor will be joined by Martha Argerich, one of the most remarkable pianists of the last half-century. She and Dutoit have performed together frequently and have already tackled Schumann’s only piano concerto on a number of occasions. Critics highlight the shift of emphasis from the technical demands of the score to the dialogue between soloist and orchestra as one of the innovations that Argerich has introduced to the Schumann concerto. This shift has utterly transformed the interpretative history of this Romantic masterpiece. Charles Dutoit says that Argerich has a special gift for uncovering the truth of every musical work, time and again transcending the boundaries of sound and touching the essence of life itself.
