About the event

An Ethno Musical Evening Featuring the Clarinet and Balkan Rhythms

Clarinetist and composer Goran Bojčevski, the founder of the Balkan Nuevo style—which fuses Balkan melodies with classical and jazz music—will perform at the 73rd Ljubljana Festival with a selected group of young musicians. The ensemble will present ethno-jazz arrangements of folk songs, jazz standards, and original compositions by Bojčevski. Performers will include accordionist Andraž Ferce, guitarist Matic Dolenc, pianist Jan Sever, double bassist Jaka Krušič, and percussionist Gregor Horvat.

Interesting facts

  • Improvisation is a key element of Bojčevski’s music, in which he combines Balkan melodies with the openness and spontaneity of jazz, allowing the two worlds to exist alongside each other and interweave, while maintaining the emotional power of tradition.
  • Composer and clarinettist Goran Bojčevski combines elements of classical and world music in his compositions, with each instrument in his ensemble telling its own story, rich with emotions that stretch from the Balkans to contemporary musical worlds.
  • In Goran Bojčevski’s native North Macedonia, the clarinet is not only an instrument, it is a symbol – frequently a central element of weddings and celebrations, where every master clarinettist is hailed as a kind of national hero.
  • Compositions by Goran Bojčevski form part of the syllabus at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.
