About the event
Tribute to the Centenary of Davis and Coltrane
Terence Blanchard and Ravi Coltrane will honor the 100th anniversary of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, two towering figures in jazz history. The event is not a nostalgic recreation but a daring re‑imagining shaped by improvisation, invention and emotional intensity. Coltrane’s influence—from modal jazz to the spiritual depth of A Love Supreme—continues to resonate across genres and through the many artists Ravi Coltrane has collaborated with.

More information
Terence Blanchard, one of the greatest trumpeters in jazz, and saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, son of John and Alice Coltrane, will honour the centenary of the birth of two visionaries in contemporary jazz, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. The latter was influenced by Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Dizzy Gillespie. His influence extends beyond jazz to rock, funk, hip-hop, and classical music, primarily due to his revolutionary approach to modal improvisation, intense spiritual expression, and innovative technical skills. Coltrane's key innovations were the pioneering establishment of modal jazz (birth of the cool, CD Kind of Blue) and the promotion of the free jazz style. Coltrane's work from the 1960s, especially the spiritual and intense A Love Supreme, had many followers among artists such as Jimi Hendrix and many guitarists (Carlos Santana, Duane Allman, John McLaughlin, Vernon Reid, The Grateful Dead, The Byrds, Steve Reich, Pharoah Sanders, Charles Lloyd...).
This tribute will not be a nostalgic performance of their music, but a bold reimagining. In keeping with the essence of jazz, the performances will feature improvisation, invention, and emotional intensity, making each evening unique and unrepeatable, a celebration of jazz's heritage and future. Terence Blanchard has won eight Grammy Awards and received fifteen nominations. Alice Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Barron, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Chick Corea, Branford Marsalis, and many others are among the musicians with whom Ravi Coltrane has collaborated since the beginning of his career. This will be his second performance in Slovenia; in 2003, he was a guest on the TV show Izza odra (From the Backstage).
"They thought that i just woke up one morning and had the blues and started playing the trumpet".
