Interesting facts

  1. The Sauvignon grape variety, which has its traditional home in the Sancerre wine region of France, has found a second home in Ptuj and Slovenia’s Štajerska region. The basis for the cultivation of this complex noble variety is the historical development of winegrowing and winemaking in the Ptuj area, practised over the centuries by successive generations.
  2. Wine culture and the wine trade in the Ptuj area were first consolidated on a larger scale in the Middle Ages by the friars of the Dominican priory and Minorite friary, who were also the most skilled winegrowers and cellar masters.
  3. In addition to extensive estates, for the most part in the Haloze hill region, the Minorites established a large wine cellar beneath their friary in the town centre around 1239.
  4. Ptuj wine was not only renowned within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy: it was also exported to other continents. Ptuj winemakers received the highest awards for their high-quality wines at exhibitions in Paris, Vienna, Graz and London.
  5. The former Ornig winery, a cultural monument of national importance, contains bottles of Zlata trta wine from 1917, thought to be the oldest wine in Central Europe.
