More information
Flautist Jurka Zoroja is an established soloist, chamber musician and teacher who runs a private music school, where she places special emphasis on creativity and improvisation. She is joined on stage by cellist Bernardo Brizani, who attracted attention at a very early age with competition successes and trained at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole (Florence) and the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, and by violinist Vasilij Meljnikov, a long-standing professor at the Ljubljana Academy of Music who is active as a soloist and chamber musician both in Slovenia and abroad. Ensemble Dissonance brings together leading musicians from Slovenia’s foremost orchestras and teaching institutions, united by a quest for new approaches to chamber music. The ensemble interweaves the classical repertoire, new Slovene works, collaborations with other artists and the rich history of chamber music in Ljubljana.
The programme opens with Mozart’s playful Quartet for Flute and String Trio and continues with Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1. After the interval the programme turns to a selection that highlights the performers’ stylistic and aesthetic openness. The second half of the evening opens with Haydn’s Divertimento No. 2 and then moves into the colourful sound worlds of French Impressionism with works by Ravel and Debussy. These are followed by SaintSaëns’s moving and romantic The Swan from The Carnival of the Animals. The evening ends with a foray into film music, featuring a new work by Jani Golob, a versatile Slovene composer of serious and light music, jazz and film music, and pieces by John Williams and Ennio Morricone.
