A pioneer of Electronic Music
In the late nineteen seventies, Miha Kralj developed a distinctive electronic language that profoundly influenced Slovenian music. Interesting facts
- He began his solo career in 1980 and, with a significant investment in synthesisers that at that time were beyond the reach of many, recorded and released an album of ambient and new-age electronic music entitled Andromeda, becoming the first solo artist in Yugoslavia to release a purely electronic album.
- Andromeda was an immediate success, selling 21,000 copies in Yugoslavia alone and more than 100,000 across Europe. It was also successful in the Benelux countries, Sweden and the Soviet Union. The album’s title track “Andromeda” featured in coverage of ski flying events in Planica for many years, particularly in slow-motion footage.
- Kralj has performed with various groups and as a solo artist at festivals such as Melodies of the Sea and Sun, the Slovene Song Festival and Pop Workshop. In 1982 he received the jury prize at the Slovene Song Festival for his composition “Robot”. In 1980 he won the second audience prize for “Halo Nataša” and several prizes at the Melodies of the Sea and Sun festival.

More information
In the late 1970s the Slovene music scene was washed by a wave of creative daring, with no one embodying it as uniquely as Miha Kralj. After performing with the groups Dekameroni (for which he wrote the hit song Sava šumi) and Prah, he struck out on his own as a one-man band, using early synthesisers and a sophisticated ear for sound to create a distinctive electronic world. In 1980 he released Andromeda, regarded as the first electronic album in the former Yugoslavia. Its “spacey” soundscape was an unexpected hit both at home and abroad, and the album’s title track accompanied footage of ski flying from Planica for decades. Despite frequent comparisons to electronic music and synthpop pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre, Kralj’s style remains unique: beautiful, introspective and unwaveringly focused on the future. A Miha Kralj concert is a rare opportunity to encounter an artist who, as a pioneer of electronic music, left an indelible mark on the sonic landscape of his home country and gave it a brand-new, previously unimagined dimension.
