About the event
In the early sonatas the piano predominates and the violin takes an accompanying role, but later the two instruments become equal partners. Sonata No. 32 belongs to this later period and is among his most mature works in this genre. Claude Debussy turned to the sonata form only in the last years of his life, when he planned a cycle of six chamber sonatas for different ensembles. The Cello Sonata was the first to be completed and reflects the composer’s characteristic use of modes and whole-tone scales. Johannes Brahms is regarded as one of the foremost masters of chamber music. He composed his Piano Trio No. 1 in 1854, later revising it extensively and shortening it, so that many regard the 1889 version as an entirely new work. These chamber works will be performed by the Irish violinist Héloïse Geoghegan, who studied in Leipzig and Limerick and has appeared as a soloist in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York and Wigmore Hall in London; the cellist Giancarlo Trimboli, a long-time member of the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto with an extensive discography for the Decca, Sony and Deutsche Grammophon labels; and the pianist Francesco De Zan, who has collaborated with musicians including Christophe Coin, Valery Oistrakh, Stefano Pagliani, Franco Petracchi, Patrick Demenga and Vladimir Mendelssohn, and since 2021 has led the Italian branch of Venezuela’s El Sistema music education programme.
