Ljubljana Festival contribution to The Music Masters on Air
The Music Masters on Air (MUSMA) has been launched ! Composers of the new generation, masters of the new era, take flight to present their work abroad and European Festivals join forces to develop a platform to welcome this new, unknown contemporary music. Seven major European festivals, with the support of the European Union, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the European Festival Association (EFA) pitch these contemporary composers beyond the borders, straight into the air. MusMA aims to promote contemporary classical music as such, with the ambition of moving people to discover the diversity of sounds of new and innovative classical music. Each of the concerts is accompanied by a roundtable or a workshop for composers, players and listeners to discuss the music and help in the appreciation of the artistry and creativity behind the music that is (often) difficult to understand. Each festival presents a young talent and the selected composers receive a commission to create a piece revolving in some way on a common theme. As an opening theme MusMA will focus on music & environment, in the broad sense of the word to include not only the natural world but also all surrounding influences. In 2011 MusMA will put a vision of the 19th century landscape next to contemporary versions of landscapes, that is, Franz Liszt alongside ten young composers - a theme proposed by Enrique Gamez of the ‘Festival International de Musica y Danza de Granada’ . The following year the 'Flanders Festival Brussels' suggests commissions on Orientalism - dealing with the 'foreign' expressed through music. The theme for 2013 will deal with Man's life and its musical reflection, whereby two types of undertakings are proposed by the Polish 'Wratislavia Cantans': on the one hand, works influenced by a composer's strong experience linked with universal events – like death, birth, initiation, misfortune, tragedy, war, victory, marriage - and on the other, works introducing the folk art heritage from the composer’s own nation. The starting shot of MusMA was sounded at the ‘Festival International de Musica y Danza de Granada’, where the Turkish project of Mehmet Can Özer was welcomed. His project is called “Aşure” (pronounced as Ishuré), for which he uses a real time improvisational software processing input of traditional Turkish instruments. On July 28, the Slovenian ‘Ljubljana Festival’ presented a MusMA concert performed by the Spanish Ensemble Residencias. Central to the programme was Miguel Gálvez-Taroncher’ s Del dolor doblegado o 12 epidodios y un poema de Cortázar, a MusMA commission. The programme also included a brilliant piece composed by the Spanish composer Jesús Torres (1965) called Manantial de luz, a piece by the Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra (1953) entitled the Trío nº 3 and a piece by the Cuban composer Louis Aguirre (1968) Oddúa. In brief, it was all about Spanish and South-American music of the 20th and 21st century. At the end of the month an encounter of young composers took place in Portugal - at the ‘Semanas de Música do Estoril’- where three of the MusMA composers also participated, namely Miguel Gálvez-Taroncher from Spain, Mehmet Can Özer from Turkey and João Madureira from Portugal. Once again this kind of platform for exchange and dialogue was shown to play a vital role in the evolution of the work of our contemporary composers and indeed of the composers themselves! more infos at www.musma.eu

Solo exhibition of paintings by Viktor Bernik
On Tuesday, 1.9. was opening of Solo exhibition of paintings by Viktor Bernik in the Pentagonal tower at the Ljubljana Castle, that will be on display every day until October 4, from 10 am till 7 pm. Viktor Bernik is a middle-generation artist who draws his motifs/inspiration from the quotidian. At first, he worked with traditional easel painting. The exhibition in the Pentagonal Tower, which presents his latest paintings, marks a return to abstract painting. Bernik's latest works bring together independent painting units, which open abstract 'real' spaces arising from inner drives that are not coincidental or impulsive, but carefully planned strokes and forms concealing the ungraspable experience of Being. At the beginning of his book ‘The Plague of Fantasies’, Slavoj Žižek argued that material externality is usually a permanently clear reflection of the 'Unconscious outside'. So the painter penetrates the veil between the inner and outer comprehension of the Real, which transcends being in this or another world. Bernik's abstract painted spaces catch the specific characteristics of the exhibition premises in the Pentagonal Tower by establishing a reflective relationship and structuring an interactive space with the viewer. Therefore, the space is not merely a passive framework around an isolated object, but is included as an integral part of the design and creative approach

With their programme Hortus Musicus overcame the temporal distance and geographical borders between countries, and demonstrated that Indian raga and Italian istampitta have more similarities than differences, and that ancient Armenian and Israeli liturgical music goes hand in hand with the spiritual creations of contemporary composers, as if reacquainting with distant relatives. The ensemble of ten musicians – singers and multi-instrumentalists on European and non-European instruments, under the artistic direction of Andres Mustonen – for one evening ensured that the enormous world became comfortably small.
