Martin Stadtfeld, piano
Festival Ljubljana 2010
Programme:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Sonata in C Major KV 279
Alban Berg: Sonata Op. 1
Johann Sebastian Bach: English Suite in F Major BWV 809
Richard Wagner: “Tannhäuser” Overture (arrangement: Franz Liszt)
Franz Liszt: Variations on a Theme by Bach
Richard Wagner: The Death of Isolde (arrangement: Franz Liszt)
In 2002, Martin Stadtfeld was the first pianist in 14 years to succeed in gaining first prize in the International Bach Competition in Leipzig – for 14 long years no one else had deserved this prize.
This success launched him into the constellation of the most successful young pianists, and in his most recent recordings it is precisely in performing Bach’s opus that his star has shone most brightly.
In addition to his ‘musical God’ Martin Stadtfeld will also perform Liszt’s virtuoso paraphrases and arrangements – without today’s negative resonances – and Mozart’s Sonata in C major KV 279, a work that the composer himself enjoyed performing on his own tours.
Of particular interest on the Slovene music stage will be Berg’s Sonata for Piano Op. 1, one of only two works the composer wrote for the piano.
Does the pairing Bach-Berg remind you of another great pianistic name? Perhaps we have the makings of a ‘new’ Glenn Gould…
