Edward Clug: »The title »Watching others« applies to universal principles
of performance art, and does not imply the process of observation. I did
not intend to emphasize or change the general principles and attitudes
of the theatre, but to underline certain details in created situations, to
focus on what interests me most – the human body. In the forefront,
there is certainly dance and movement as such, which is my
initial and elementary outset, but at the same time I attempt to explore
the possibilities of the human body. The foundation of music, as well
as the situations that develop on stage, is the fluctuation of surreal
moments and reality. The surreal world is set up with black barriers
and gliding walls, which reveal and conceal dancers’ bodies. The
walls create a dialogue between this visible and invisible field, and at
the same time don’t stand in the way of the course of action. In other
words, they do not represent obstacles, but merely introduce separate
spaces. This underlying concept of the performance is based on layers
of sculptures within the stage architecture and observation of dance
through the processes of revealing and concealing on one hand and the
interlacement of surreal world and the atmosphere of minimalist music
on the other. The scenes are complete illusions and my desire is for the
spectator’s imagination and his immediate emotions to fill the space that
accompanies the audience throughout the performance.«
