Referring to The Queen of Spades, Tchaikovsky wrote: “I must tell you that it was with enthusiasm and sacrifice that I wrote this work, investing all of my soul in it…”
The Queen of Spades is a charming operatic work precisely because of the sensitive juxtaposition of emotional contrasts – the opposition between romantic longing, occasionally with the childlike naivety of unrestrained lyricism, pastoral sections, references to past styles and folklore, as well as dark dramatic shades, often expressed with Wagnerian gestures.
