Music workshop for Children

25th Slovenian Music Days

The Slovenian Music Days will, for the second time, host a music workshop for children. In the jubilee year of the festival, the workshop will be led by composer and senior lecturer in music theory at the Musicology Department of the Ljubljana Faculty of Arts, Larisa Vrhunc. As demonstrated by numerous models at international festivals abroad, and confirmed by our exceptional experience at the Slovenian Music Days in 2009, young people do not have any prejudices regarding contemporary music, it is simply necessary to make them acquainted with this less familiar musical language.
Larisa Vrhunc would like the young participants in the music workshop to discover the contemporary musical world from within; young people understand and perceive music in a different way if they are actively immersed in it. By performing contemporary compositions they acquire contemporary performance and composition techniques, and thus the work ‘wins them over’.
The selection of compositions from the opus of Larisa Vrhunc is aimed at children of various age groups. The choral composition Srna (Doe) is dedicated to preschool children, but its interesting contemporary means and simple contemporary techniques will also attract pupils in the lower grades of primary school to participate. Along with Larisa Vrhunc, the two workshops for primary school children will be led by students of primary school teaching from the Ljubljana Faculty of Education and from the Department of Music Pedagogy of the Ljubljana Academy of Music.
Pupils from music schools and students of musicology and composition will be introduced to more complex and technically demanding works. Part of the workshop will again this year be dedicated to improvisation, and young people will have an opportunity for creative reflection on music, on creativity. In this way they will be able to recognise the difference between understanding a composed composition, in which it is necessary to delve into someone else’s thinking, and one’s own improvisation, in which they will experience the live process of the emergence of a composition.
